Argentina vs South Africa

Argentina vs South Africa : Rugby South Africa will control their own destiny when they face Argentina in their final match of the 2019 Rugby Championship on Saturday, as the Springboks will be crowned champions if they beat the Pumas with the bonus, regardless of the result in the match between New Zealand and Australia.

The All Blacks sit one point behind the Springboks in the standings and will face old rivals Australia in Perth earlier on Saturday..

South Africa are top of the Rugby Championship table going into the third and final round of the truncated championship and head coach Rassie Erasmus has named a strong team as he brings his fuill squad together for the first time.

Erasmus sent several first-choice players straight to New Zealand to prepare for their round-two encounter while starting a few fringe squad members in their opening home clash with Australia.

That first fixture ended in a bonus-point win over the Wallabies, and another five-point success will hand the Springboks the Rugby Championship crown, but that might be a big ask in a meeting of two solid defensive line-ups.

The opening two rounds of the Rugby Championship have featured just 146 points in four matches – last year that figure was 209 while in 2017 it was 268.

Erasmus and Pumas coach Mario Ledesma have both shown their hands this year, employing a rush defence to counter the All Blacks’ running game, and two physical sides going head to head look set to produce a hard-fought grind.

It’s been a decade since the Springboks won the Rugby Championship. Well, technically, they have never won the Rugby Championship. That’s the extent of New Zealand’s dominance in this competition.

Ever since the competition changed its name from the Tri-Nations and expanded to include Argentina, the All Blacks have won all but one tournament. Australia clinched the honours in 2015 – the same year the Springboks failed to record a single win.

Much has changed since then, though, and the Boks will know exactly what they need to do to win the trophy by the time things kick-off against Argentina on Saturday night.

Australia and New Zealand will slog it out in Saturday’s mid-morning kick-off before Argentina and Los Pumas bring the curtain down at 21:40 (South African time) in Salta.
