The Dallas Cowboys, playing without running back Ezekiel Elliott, open the NFL preseason on Saturday, August 10, 2019 (8/10/19) when they face the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Preview: San Francisco quarterbacks C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens will split time during the 49ers’ preseason opener Saturday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Coach Kyle Shanahan isn’t saying which one will start.

Shanahan told KNBR Radio in San Francisco that the reps have been even for Beathard and Mullens, who are competing to back up Jimmy Garoppolo. “I wouldn’t say anyone has the edge, because I don’t want to go there yet,” Shanahan said.

Through 11 days of camp, Mullens has completed 65 of 102 pass attempts (63.7 percent), and Beathard has completed 55 of 95 (58.5 percent).

“That’s their season,” quarterbacks coach Jon Kitna said. “I never understood the backup quarterback that went in and played slow and used the whole play clock and that stuff. I was trying to get as many plays as possible. Let’s go faster, faster, faster, faster, faster. The linemen didn’t like you for a minute, but then they ended up liking you because the other guys got tired. I think it’s important to get as many quality reps as you can in the preseason because those are real and it’s hard to get real reps in this league. It’s going to be really important for them and their development. And their competition.”

The Cowboys’ 53-man roster, although relatively young, is largely set. None of the starting and key contributor positions seem up for grabs.

Backup quarterback is different.

The Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers will be the final teams to take the field in Week 1 of the 2019 NFL preseason. They are set to meet Saturday night at Levi’s Stadium, where the Cowboys find themselves as one of the biggest underdogs on the schedule.

San Francisco is laying 4.5 points at home, according to the latest betting line at OddsShark. If Dallas’ recent preseason history is any indication, the Cowboys will have to wait before recording their first victory of the year.

Dallas is on a six-game losing streak in Week 1 of the preseason under head coach Jason Garrett. That includes a 24-21 loss to the 49ers a year ago.

The 49ers are undefeated in their two Week 1 preseason games with Kyle Shanahan as the head coach. San Francisco beat the Kansas City Chiefs 27-17 to kick off their year in 2017.
